What are the practices that assist us in opening up to the gifts involved in healing? In the next chapter we’ll talk about the main ones that helped me become my own shaman, and that can help you do the same.

WEAVING
TOGETHER THE
THREADS OF THE
SHAMAN’S PATH
In addition to learning healing techniques, becoming your own shaman is dependent upon your clarity. Once you’re clear within yourself, you can be a clear channel for others. How to get that clarity? The following five practices will be key to your development.
There’s no particular linear order—as in, first do this, then that. Instead, it’s more of a weaving together of various threads until you’ve become the whole cloth of an accomplished shaman. At the same time that you are clearing your energy field of blocks, examining your belief systems, and expanding your awareness in order to have a solid connection to the unified field and access to its powerful healing energy, you also need to be of service in some way so that you are giving to, as well as receiving from, the universe. Fortunately, these tasks are accomplished with fairly simple tools—surprisingly simple, in fact. A healer clears much of his or her own blocks and opens to receive ever-higher vibrations through the practices of journaling, meditation, prayer, forgiveness, and being of service.
Practice #1: Journaling
I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “The truth will set you free.” But did you ever wonder why? Or how? If you’ve read my first book, Truth Heals, then you already have a fairly good idea.
Whenever life gets too difficult or threatening, such as when we experience an emotional or physical trauma of some kind—we may feel that we can’t handle the truth and so we try to deny it. We send the facts about what is happening—and our resulting thoughts, beliefs, and emotions—underground, burying them deep inside us where we think we don’t have to deal with them. We’ll often distract ourselves with something less frightening, or even overwrite the truth with lies that, in the moment, feel safer—much like using the classic “I walked into a door” excuse to explain the bruises that actually came from domestic violence. We may lie to ourselves with things like “Oh, he really loves me,” rather than consciously acknowledging the fear and danger that exist in a dysfunctional relationship.
The problem with this “Out of sight, out of mind,” deny-and-dissociate strategy is that it doesn’t work, at least not for long. Truth is a mighty force, a powerful energy that, like all others in our universe, exists in physical reality even if we can’t see it with our eyes. Reality can’t be wished away any more than gravity can. The truth exists, and it always will; this is a natural law of the universe. Therefore, dealing with it in a healthy way requires that it be processed.
